Joseph Cardinal Ratzinger, now Pope Benedict XVI, is not the successor of Pope John Paul II. Rather, he is the successor of St. Peter, who was Christ's Vicar on Earth.
That said, Peter was a man, a shepherd tending the Christian flock until they were called to join the Father in Heaven.
Ecumenism has merit, but only if its goal is proclaiming the truth, rather than simply helping us to avoid the unpleasantries commonly associated with factionalism.
